Character In Depth Study

As our character Gothel is one of the first films by our company and Disney to  have the protagonist as an evil character and as this is the first ever prequel by both companies, we wanted to define and outline  the qualities behind the character. By doing this we explored the different avenues of her personality and we get a greater in depth study adding up to why she became the person she is in 'Tangled'.

Co-Productions

Looking at other films who have based their films on fairytale adaptations or novels they have all always been in association with another company. For example, 'Ella Enchanted' was based on a novel inspired from the Disney movie ' Snow White' and 'Cinderella' with variations of added 'fairies, elves, ogres, gnomes and giants'. Like our movie, we would like to have an association of co-producing with Disney to help grab the same audience of 'Tangled' and to reinforce the themes that Disney produce.

Our Production Company Name and Logo

Our Production Name

For our production company name, we wanted to stick to the theme of girly, fairytale and child-like to resemble our film and the Disney characteristics. We decided as a group that the factor which draws most girls together is shine and sparkle, which we wanted to incorporate into our title. We initially went on www.thesaurus.com to generate terms associated with twinkle and glitter; these are the results we came up with below:

After finding these suitable words, we decided to configure a catchy, vibrant and dynamic name. After coming up with numerous unsuccessful names, we decided to do research on potential names, the best inspiration for this was from MAC Cosmetics eyeshadow range:

Examples of Our Production Logo

Production Company's

For our production company logo, we wanted to generate ideas on how other companies have displayed theirs. This included looking at mainstream and independent film companies and the types of films they produced. This aided us to create and display ours in the specific way we wanted to.

Target Audience

To help us know specifically who our target audience are and to help us drive through our film production, we have decided to analyse in depth the possibilities and constrictions we will face.

Trailers Influences

To aid us on the process of how we would be able to do our film trailer, we decided to look at various genres of movie trailers for inspiration. These included action, adventure, fantasy to fairytale. We looked at these different types so we could incorporate some elements in to our own.

Film Synopsis

Deciding our film synopsis was easier than expected as we were doing a prequel of the Disney original film 'Tangled'. However, our film will be about the build up towards Gothel's evil nature. After much discussion and compromises, we decided to make the films symmetrical in the sense that Gothel had an evil step mother and also Gothel will become an evil step mother. This made the story line a lot more interesting and easier for our target audience to follow up on.
Gothel's father is deceased and she now lives with her step mother, Gretchen and her loyal step sister, Rosaline. Her relationship changes with her step mother rapidly for the worst; causing conflict, arguments and misbehaviour. Gothel explores the rooms in the house one day to finally realise why and how she is such an outsider of the family. Every night Rosaline would have her hair brushed and would sing to her mother to make them youthful and beautiful. Realising this, Gothel plans out her revenge to get rid of her step mother and take Rosaline's hair. During the night, she sneakily cuts Rosaline's hair, thinking  she could be beautiful and youthful instead of ugly and vulgar. However, the hair turns to brown and loses its power. Gothel's rage unleashes, she threatens and bargains with them to tell her their secret. Finding out there is only one magical golden flower left to hold these powers, she escapes to go on the hunt to find the last magical golden flower. She loses out finding the magic golden flower to the King and Queen of Astrodia. She takes it upon herself to regain what she thinks should be hers, by taking the young princess, Rapunzel. She adopts  Rapunzel as a step daughter and for her healing powers.

Below is our draft idea of how we cam about the film synopsis:

The Film Title

Our film is about the Disney character, Gothel from the hit movie 'Tangled'. Seeing as our movie  genre is based upon inspirations from Disney, Pixar and other fairytale movies, we researched movie titles that had a common theme. We took examples from the major time Disney princess movie, such as 'Cinderella', 'Snow White', 'Tangled', 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Enchanted'  and many more. The common strand that we gathered were that they were either names after the protagonist\princess or had the main theme in one word. So, we decided to follow with this idea and name our movie after the antagonist, Gothel; staying true to the representations of a fairytale movie.
The use of the protagonist's name as the movie title is not uncommon with serious and non-animated films; for instance, "Robocop", "Hanna", "Rambo", "Terminator", "Hannah Montana" and many more.

The Importance and Function of Trailers

The importance and function of film trailers are for marketing puroses. this is to grab the attention from the public and attract audiences to create a sense of hype and curiosity to wards the upcoming movie. as we mentioned the marketing aspect also creates a means of generating reveune for the producers once the film has been debuted. the format of a conventional trailer usually last between two minutes to two minutes and thirty second. it is during these few condensed shots that gives the audience a snippet of what they can expect to see from a particular movie. another important aspect of a trailer is that the time when a tailer is released to the film release date creates mystery and anticipation for the cinema goer. in addition the trailer details the age limit, language and genre of film it caters towards.

Mood Boards

Eva's Mood Board:
I have compiled images and quotes for my mood board below showing aspects of what inspires me and moves me.
Majority of these images and quotes relate to the dark side of stories; I have largely focused on twisted, dark fantasies, sinister beauty, oxymoronic words like "bittersweet" and "pretty ugly". Also, I have included images and quotes on the fear of being an outsider, confinement of oneself and isolation. It can be deduced from my mood board that there is a cliche of fairytales that I highlighted between good versus evil.
My original plan for the trailer was loosely based on the film "Tangled" infused together with an upcoming film, "Maleficent". Thus, I gathered research on a eerie and corrupt side of fairytales and drew much inspiration from iconic evil female antagonistic characters in Disney films; these included, Maleficent, Ursula, Cinderella's Stepmother, Evil Queen in Snow White and Gothel. Gothel is the main character I am concentrating on.
I also was inspired by Tyler Shields; he is a very controversial photographer who's work consists of bloody, violent, creative, twisted fantasies which still convey a message. They are simple yet striking. Moreover, I was influenced by unique musicians like Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey; both are individual in their sense of music and style, yet portray an intriguing, dark beauty. Literature was a huge influence over this piece after I read Grimm Fairy Tales and researched that Disney adapt their stories into huge films, suitable for their audiences. I researched quotes associated with creepy, spooky fantasies which perfectly convey my mood board. The Gothic era was massively encompassed in my mood board, as well as, fashion and make up.
I compiled my mood board on Keynotes and Photoshop to edit images to place on my mood board.
This mood board is a way in which my trailer can convey all these themes and be inspired by. It will help in deciding the many aspects of my trailer, including: setting, genre, music, shots and many more.

  Nicole's Mood Board:
My mood board was inspired by many different aspects of the 'fairy tale' world. I believe in not only the fairy tale of living 'happily ever after', instead that a fairy tale is how you make it and how you want it to be.An example being a wedding of your dreams, one that you create it so it can become your fairy tale and in sense, your happily ever after!
I based the majority of my mood board upon characters of more modern stories defined at literal fairy tales. My definition of is expressed as good vs evil and how there is always a twist to the story, but the outcome is always positive. Fairy tales can also be conveyed in a game such as on the computer or played on the television where the story line of how the game is played cannot be real life, however it is played to try and defeat evil. Another similarity of how I got inspired by this mood board was Taylor Swift, her songs are very Country and yet she writes her own love songs and are in the theme of 'fairy tale' with a very modern twist to it. I laid out the mood board as a book - 'once a upon a time' as the introductory (like most fairy tale films) right through to 'and they lived happily ever after', with everything in the middle reading to how you want to portray it.

Meliz's Mood Board:
Whether you are a disciple of all things Pixar, or you cling to the idea that 2D, hand-drawn work will come back in style with much desperation, there’s no denying that Disney, in so many ways, shaped who we are today. Watching these movies as kids, and even as adults, we are transported into worlds where things are beautiful, where people are nice, and where even the most tense of situations will neatly wrap up with a cute, happy ending. And your Disney film of choice says more than you could think whilst watching a 1 hour and 30 minutes and contained our tiny little dreams. With what we are working on now, I believe it is possible for everyone to take a trip down memory lane, and this would be represented and achieved through a short teaser trailer.
My mood board above shows all the commercial characters in all of Disney’s creation. The upper half of the mood board are all the innocent characters compared to the bottom half of the mood board which shows all the villains created in Disney. Our aim is to add a little twist and modernize the original way a Disney film would be shown. The reason as to why I have shown all the villains in my mood board is because it would interesting to know why our villains became so mischievous and threatening. As a group, we decided to show a villains side of the story and how they became the way they did. The character that we are most interested in is ‘Gothel’ from the film ‘Tangled ‘.  She is the evil step mother who uses her step daughter’s long, golden hair to keep young and youthful.
With our teaser trailer, our audience will be left off the edge of their seats, wanting to know who the character is and why she is so mysterious.

Our Pitch

After much deliberation on the concept of the film and what possible themes may occur to aid us with our pitch this is the final outcome:
"  She Was The Perfect Step Sister.
Beauty, Grace And Elegance Was Bestowed Upon Her.
But Then Her Hair Glistened. So I...  "

Initial Ideas

As a group we brainstormed ideas to help generate possible film trailers we would like to do. This was a quick and efficient way to explore different avenues for our trailer. It made it clear for us as we understood what we wanted to to and how we were going to do it.

Our Final Trailer Idea:

Through our discussions, we decided to go with what we felt knowledgable, comfortable and liked when deciding what trailer we would go for. We chose the to opt for the Children's Fantasy as this is also what we enjoy watching and we also assumed it would be different to others that have been down previously. We took inspiration from the likes of the movie Black Swan to controversial photographer Tyler Shields. Below is our brainstorm for this.

What is a trailer? What is a teaser trailer?

In this Prezi, I will be explaining the concepts of a feature trailer and a teaser trailer. I will study their characteristics and what each entails through different studies.
